The Sportable Richmond Rimriders Host Wheelchair Basketball Tourney
A reader told me about this really amazing basketball team — The Sportable Richmond Rimriders, who are hosting the Rimrider Invitational at St. Christopher’s School this weekend. As far as I can tell, it is free and open to the public. The Sportable Richmond Rimriders are a member of the the NWBA, National Wheelchair Basketball Association, and compete in Division III.

University of Richmond Offers Swim Enrichment for Kids
University of Richmond is offering a Fall swim clinic coached by the University of Richmond women’s swimming staff. For those kids who are already missing swim team — this is for you!
The clinics will focus on the fundamentals of swimming (technique) and fun! The focus will be all four competitive strokes, starts, all turns, and more.
Clinics are held at the University of Richmond Robins Center Pool in the Weinstein Center. This is a really nice pool, plus lots of room in the bleachers for parents!
Details:
* The water temperature at the RC pool is 80 degrees as per NCAA regulations (Me: 80 degrees will feel cold at first, but great after they start to swim).
DATES (This session is 12 Sundays) September 6, 2009 – November 22, 2009
Times: 3:00 – 4:00 PM Skill Session 12 and under swimmers (50 spots)
4:00 – 5:00 PM Skill Session 12 and under swimmers (50 spots)
5:00 – 6:00 PM Skill Practice 10 and over swimmers (50 spots)

NBA Star Builds Basketball Court
NBA all-star Ben Wallace, who formerly played basketball for Virginia Union is building a private gym in Henrico County off of Westwood Avenue, near 195.
According to the Times-Dispatch, the concrete has been poured and walls are starting to go up for a reception and locker area.
Representatives said the gym will be a private court for Wallace, a four-time NBA defensive player of the year. He adopted Richmond as his hometown after becoming an All-American basketball player during his two years at Virginia Union University.

UR Triathlete Places 3rd Overall in Collegiate Championships
Local triathlete Julie Rechel from the University of Richmond placed 3rd female overall in the Individual Collegiate National Championships on Saturday in a time of 2:20:00.
The Lone Star State attracted the top collegiate athletes Saturday for the USA Triathlon Collegiate National Championship, where athletes battled chilly early conditions and a challenging bike course at Buffalo Springs Lake.
Rechel was less than 2 minutes behind first place winner, Jessica Broderick.

Gold’s Gym to Add Pool to Willow Lawn
Gold’s Gym at Willow Lawn is building a 15,000 square foot expansion including a pool, basketball court and racquetball court. Another pool in the Near West End is cool. One in a shopping center is a bit strange though.

Monument Avenue 10K Means Road Closures
Tomorrow is the Monument Avenue 10K -- which means, if you aren’t running in the race or cheering for someone you may want to stay away from the area.
Here is a list of road closures:
Race Day Street Closings
* Broad Street will be closed between Belvidere Street and Lombardy Street from 5 AM to 11 AM. The recommended detour for westbound traffic is right on Belvidere Street to 95 North. The recommended detour for eastbound traffic is left on Allen Avenue, right on Leigh Street, right on Belvidere. Motorists are encouraged to use I-95 as an alternate.
* Laurel Street will be closed between Main and Grace Street from 5 AM to 1:30 PM.
* Franklin Street will be closed between Shafer Street and Belvidere Street from 5 AM to 1:30 PM.
* Cathedral Place will close from Laurel to Shafer Court from 5 AM to 1 PM.
* Park Avenue will close from Shafer Court to Lombardy Street/Stuart Circle from 7 AM to 9 AM.
* Lombardy Street will be closed between Broad Street and Franklin Street (Stuart Circle) from 7:30 AM to 10:30 AM.
* Franklin Street will be closed between Lombardy Street and Shafer Street from 5 AM to 1:30 PM.
* Grace Street will be closed between Belvidere Street and Allen Avenue from 7:30 AM to 10 AM.
* Monument Avenue / Franklin Street will be closed between Staples Mill Road and Stuart Circle (Lombardy Street) from 8 AM to 1 PM. The recommended detour for eastbound traffic is left on Staples Mill Road, right on Broad Street, left on Allen Avenue, right on Leigh Street, right on Belvidere Street. The recommended detour for westbound traffic is right on Belvidere Street, left on Leigh Street, left on Allen Avenue, right on Broad Street.
* The Boulevard will be closed at Monument Avenue from 8:30 AM to 1 PM. The recommended detour for northbound traffic is left on Park Avenue, right on Thompson Street to 195. The recommended detour for southbound traffic is right on Grace Street, right on Thompson Street, left on Broad Street, left on Hamilton Street to 195.
* There will also be numerous street closings for all north and south streets intersecting Monument Avenue / Franklin Street between Staples Mill Road and Belvidere Street.MOTORISTS ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO USE
I-95 AND I-195 AROUND THE CITY.

Davenport Squash Tournament Starts Today
The world’s best squash players compete at the University of Richmond for nearly $100,000 in prize money starting today and continuing through Saturday.
The Davenport & Company North American Open will be held on an all-glass McWil exhibition court in the Millhiser Gymnasium at the university.
The public is welcome to attend. Tickets start at $10 for today’s match and top out at $75 for the best seats at the championship final at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
