The movie focuses on the exclusion of Iranian women at soccer matches by following girls desperately trying to attend the match between Iran and Bahrain, that will determine who will be competing in the World Cup.\n\nWomen are forbidden from the stadium and their interest in the game is discouraged, but that doesn't stop a handful of girls from dressing up as boys and trying to sneak into the game. This semi-documentary style film, that received its world premier at the 2006 Toronto Film Series, strikes a delicate balance between a raucous, humorous sports film and a social commentary of human rights in Iran, particularly relating to women.\n\nEvent Type: Fair/Festival\nContact: (804) 289-8860

DESCRIPTION:Civil rights attorney, scholar and author, Michael Meltsner, will speak Oct. 2 at the University of Richmond School of Law about his work as a legal activist and litigator.\n\nThe talk will be held in the law school's Moot Court Room from 12-1 p.m., followed by a reception and book signing. The event is free and open to the public.\n\nMeltsner is Matthews Distinguished University Professor at Northeastern Law School in Boston, where he also served as dean from 1979-84. He also has taught at Harvard and Columbia law schools.\n\nHis memoir, "The Making of a Civil Rights Lawyer," offers an inside look at legal reform and includes portraits of Thurgood Marshall, William Kunstler and Derrick Bell. The book provides a critical analysis of early civil rights efforts to achieve social change through litigation and presents the personalities, policies and tactics that continue to shape reform efforts today.\n\nMeltsner became active in the civil rights movement after graduating from Yale Law School, when he became the second white lawyer on the staff of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. He worked there with future Supreme Court associate justice Marshall, Bell and other notables, such as Anthony Amsterdam and Jack Greenburg. He filed hundreds of lawsuits to integrate Southern institutions and argued dozens of cases before the Supreme Court.\n\nMeltsner represented Muhammad Ali in the case that removed legal barriers to his return to the boxing ring after refusing induction into the Army, and he tried the case that led to the integration of Southern hospitals. He also was intricately involved in the capital punishment litigation that led to the Supreme Court's 1972 landmark decision in Furman v. Georgia.\n\nMeltsner was a Guggenheim Fellow and Prize Fellow of the American Academy of Berlin. He has been a consultant to the U.S. Department of Justice and the Ford and Carnegie foundations. The latter sent him to South Africa in 1978 to help set up a law defense fund to advocate against apartheid. He is the author of five previous books, including "Cruel and Unusual: The Supreme Court and Capital Punishment" and the novel "Short Takes."

The neighborhood of Bravica still suffers the residual horror from its time as a torture center during the Bosnian War. This pain is mirrored in Esma, a single mother struggling to make ends meet while fighting to come to terms with the scars she carries from the war and her tumultuous relationship with her daughter.\n\nSara, the 12 year old tomboy, struggles with her own fears and pain, not the least of which are caused by her nagging suspicion that her deceased father was not a "shaheed" (war martyr) like her mother claims he was. First time director Jasmila Zbanic was highly lauded for Grbavica which won the 2006 Berlin Film Festival's top prize and was the Bosnia-Herzegovina entry for the foreign film category in the 2006 Academy Awards.\n\nEvent Type: Fair/Festival\nContact: (804) 289-8860

Bring your cake(s) to MM on Friday the 26th or Saturday before the event. Boxes will be available in the lobby. Find out and send in the cakewalk form. You can also donate $6.00 to purchase cakes.\n\n T-Shirts\n The PTA will have a t-shirt design contest this year so we can have a student designed t-shirt. Look for more information shortly. We will only be doing pre-ordered t-shirts this year so be ready to order as soon as the design is approved.\n\n Volunteers\n We have had a great response to our request for volunteers but we still need a few more. For those of you that have called or emailed Andy and Peggy, we’ll get back to you this week with where you can help out. Look for more information to come. This nondenominational service commemorates those in the Greater Richmond and surrounding areas, who have lost their lives due to domestic violence in the past year. During the ceremony, families, friends and community leaders will have the opportunity to speak on behalf of the victims or give testimonies about how domestic violence has affected their lives.\n\nIn 1994, the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Ms. Magazine began the Remember My Name Memorial to honor those who have died and to generate awareness of domestic violence. Since 1995, over 60 men, women and children are memorialized on the Metro Richmond monument.\n\nOctober is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The YWCA and other agencies and organizations, are holding many events throughout the month to highlight issues and generate awareness of family violence. According to the Virginia Sexual and Domestic Violence Action Alliance, between 2000 and 2004, hotline calls have increased by 24 percent and over 211,000 calls have been answered.\n\nThe YWCA of Richmond provides comprehensive services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, including hospital accompaniment, free shelter, counseling and 24-hour crisis hotline.\n\nFor information about submitting a name to the memorial, contact Becky Lee (804) 643-6761 ext 128.\n\nFor general information about Remember My Name, contact the YWCA at (804) 643-6761.

DESCRIPTION:Rare is the improvising artist who reaches the wider audience without diluting his art. Rarer still is such an artist who sees his audience expand apace with his musical vision. While participating in just about every avenue of modern music-making possible, Pat Metheny’s singular approach has been captured in a variety of settings, each a distinctive piece of a bold, larger design. Each step in Metheny’s ever-evolving career has been distinctly unique and yet all are indelibly etched with his signature. Metheny’s constant redefining of the jazz genre continues with his Pat Metheny Trio, featuring Modlin Center regular Christian McBride on bass and drummer Antonio Sanchez.
