Jon Baliles announced his candidacy today for the First District Richmond City Council seat, currently held by Bruce Tyler, saying “We need a representative to engage our residents and be resourceful and find workable solutions. So many people are inspired by the potential of Richmond and we need government officials that reflect and believe in that same potential.”
Mr. Baliles is involved in a number of Richmond projects and organizations, including publishing the event website rivercityrapids.com, co-organizing the RVA Street Art Festival, and serving on the Museum District Neighborhood Board, the Richmond Folk Festival Music Programming Committee, and the Board of Directors of the Virginia Repertory Theatre.
He has spent the past 4 ½ years working at City Hall, most recently as Assistant to the Director of Planning and Development Review. Per City Code requirements, he is resigning that position to run for City Council, and will be returning to the insurance industry.
He is the son of former Virginia Governor Gerald Baliles.
