RPD Statement Regarding Reports of Fake Police Officer in Windsor Farms

Some Windsor Farms residents expressed concern about a possibly fake police officer in their neighborhood on January 18. The officer in question was in fact a detective with the Richmond Police Department investigating recent burglaries.

Following is further information from the Richmond Police Department:

This is Sergeant Chris Jernigan with the Richmond Police Department. I am writing in response to the various emails that have been circulated regarding the “Fake Police Officer” in Windsor Farms on January 18th.

The individual in question was actually a Henrico County detective on a case involving burglaries to residences in both Henrico County and the City of Richmond.

His unit was tracking an individual suspected of committing burglaries when the suspect drove through Windsor Farms. This detective positioned himself so that, when called upon, he could take the roll of the lead car and follow the suspect. While waiting to be called upon he came in contact with two residents. During both of these interactions, he identified himself as a police officer, showed the residents his badge and told them that he was on a burglary assignment. I also understand that he parked in one of the resident’s driveway. I can only imagine the detective did this in order to conceal his presence as the suspect drove by his location. The suspect in this case was arrested and charged with several felony offenses later that same day. This is just another example of a successful joint operation between the HPD and RPD to resolve criminal activity in the metro Richmond area.

I want to commend every one of you for getting the word out so quickly to the threat of someone impersonating a police officer. I hope you continue to be vigilant in your observations for any suspicious activity and report it immediately to us.

If anyone has any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
