Bernie’s Subs & Pizza at the Tuckahoe Shopping Center Gets Some Blogger Love
New York food blogger, The Hungry Roach, came to Richmond for Easter and wrote a review of some local food joints. Most interesting of all was that she mentioned the Near West End’s Bernie’s Subs & Pizza - a place I’d never heard of, despite living nearby and frequenting the Tuckahoe Shopping Center where it is located.
This place is well-loved, the on-line reviews rave about it. Apparently, Bernie’s has been in business over 35 years and has never really changed anything — save when they added roast beef to the menu, years ago. How many places like this have a YouTube video made about them? Amazing! Check out the YouTube video on Bernie’s featuring staff member Susan Crone. And it is definitely a place I want to try after watching this!
This is a place that is all about the food and the people it serves. It is a neighborhood place where everyone is a regular, and is always packed. This is a place full of nostalgia for many people, which i guess is why, they won’t change a thing at Bernie’s. Folks just want to forever be the same. Stay tuned for a report on the food after I visit.

Thanks for the shout out! So glad that you have finally discovered this unassuming place. Just note – I’m the Hungry Roach (not Hungary Roach) – although, I am dying to go to Hungary!! Wish I was down there and could head to Bernie’s for lunch today.
Hmm. I’m glad you caught that. I must have been thinking that the Hungary Roach would be a more appealing name for a restaurant reviewer!
I don’t remember the first time I went to Bernie’s, but I think it was at least 15 years ago! I had no idea they had been in business for 35 years, but often did wonder….
I sent a link to this article to some co-workers and they all left for Bernies! Bernie’s makes great subs!
Definitely heated!
I’ve been going to Bernie’s since I was a kid. We love it. They’re on my speed dial so I can order ahead. I try to take my kids there for lunch on Fridays. It’s their big day out with Mom.

I moved to richmond from NY in 1972 and have lived here 39 yrs. Wanted to find a place that made great subs and found Bernies when they were at Buford rd shopping center. Bernie relocated to Robious Rd shopping center then to its present location in near U Richmond. A place doest stay in buisness for 35 yrs unless they have good food. They make the best subs I ever had sorry fellow NY ers. My favorite is the regular with the hot peppers Yummmmmm. Take my advice and go you wont be dissapointed!!!!
