Firetrucks in my neighborhood 2 nights ago woke me up. The fire caused significant damage but thankfully, no one was injured. The early morning fire was on Glenside Drive near Harvard Road.

Knitting on the Road in the Near West End
Knitting trip leaves from Near West End:
River City Knitters is hosting a bus trip to Baltimore on Saturday, November 8. The charter bus still has some room - so, if anyone would like to attend Stiches East and you want to come along, please drop me an email. I will direct you to the person coordinating the trip. We will be leaving the Park N Ride on Parham Road @ Fordson (west end Richmond) at 7:00 a.m. and returning to the lot at 9:00 pm. The bus ride is $30 (can’t beat that deal with gas prices like they are!); the fee does NOT include Stitches tickets, etc., but you can purchase your ticket online at the Stitches website above.
On top of that, did you know that the River City Knitters meet at the Tuckahoe Library? I mean I had no idea I could learn how to knit two socks on one circular needle. If you want to learn how, Oct. 25th is the date. Click here for details and look on the right hand sidebar.

Folk Festival Kicks off the Weekend with Pole Flyers
Don’t forget to check out the Richmond Folk Festival this weekend. The RTD has some nice video footage of the pole flyers, or Tezcatlipoca Voladores, who performed last night. Watch the video it is totally amazing. And the Tescatlipoca Voladores will perform two more times today, and one more on Sunday. Click here for the schedule.
We always plan our weekend around the Folk Festival — what’s not to love? It’s going to be beautiful weather , it’s free and it sure to be a culturally enriching experience.

Rudlin Torah Acadamy Applies for Special Use Permit
Rudlin Torah Acadamy appears (based on their address being 6801 Patterson Ave.) to be applying for a special use permit to allow a same sex dorm at their school. Currently, the building is already under construction, so my guess is that this is for additional work. Here is the info from today’s agenda. If you want to learn more or live adjacent to this property, you might want to attend the meeting and find out the details. Please keep us posted if you learn anything.
In other matters, there is also a proposal for a special use permit for Tempsford Land, south of Cary Street Road for several multifamily units. Not sure what this is about but it seems like a strange request based on the existing neighborhood. Ok, here’s the info from the agenda.
11. Ord. No. 2008-236 (Patron: President Pantele, By Request) - To authorize the special use of *** 6801 Patterson Avenue for the purpose of a private school with a same sex dormitory ***.
(Patron: Mayor Wilder, By Request) - To authorize the special use of *** 101 Tempsford Lane for the purpose of construction and occupancy of up to 10 multi-family dwellings ***.
