B.J.’s Wholesale Club Announces December Opening Date

B.J.’s Wholesale Club has announced the opening date for their West End Richmond Store at December 6, of this year. Currently, their closest store is located in Mechanicsville.
B.J.’s will occupy the space behind Regency Square Mall. More details on the construction were reported here and here last November.
The 12.5-acre site across Starling Drive from Regency Mall is proposed for development with a 117,286 square foot BJ’s Wholesale with gas pumpers. When I first heard this, all I could think about was how the 2-lane Starling Drive could handle the traffic. Indeed a Traffic Impact Study is actually what is holding up the approval process with Henrico County. Besides the traffic, I suppose it might help improve the health of Regency Mall. The giant purple Disco Sports must be pleased
The development is really close to the residential neighborhood, as you can see in these photos.

More traffic around the Regency area might not be a bad thing. Hasn’t the mall had their lunch eaten ever since the Short Pump mall opened up? More people and traffic there might increase the attractiveness of Regency Square and encourage it to develop, not to mention the smaller shopping mall on the corner of Starling and Quioccosan.
Shopping options that aren’t the madness of Broad Street and Short Pump combined are always welcome I would think.
The problem with Regency is that they are still trying to be a “fashion” mall. It was much better and more successful when they had a well rounded set of tenants, including book stores and a drug store. I have heard that the rent is very high too. They can’t compete with the new malls this way. They need to become a one-stop shopping center. If they lose an anchor, they should consider getting a grocery store as a tenant to replace it. There is a small Walmart across the street too, so a nicer store like Kroger or even Ukrops would work.
While those are interesting observations, there is a very nice Krogar across the street as well in the spot of the old ridge cinema, and a Ukrops and Krogar very close at Gayton Crossing. Not sure that another grocery store is needed.
Maybe a Target?
