UR Spiders Sports Update for October 15
Here’s the latest University of Richmond Spiders Sports update for Monday, October 15 from Bob Black:
No. 20 Richmond Routs Stony Brook, 42-0
Eric Ward set a career-high with three touchdown passes - all coming in the third quarter - as No. 20 Richmond blanked Stony Brook 42-0 at UR Stadium Saturday afternoon. Tim Hightower surpassed 100 yards on the ground for the fifth-straight game and broke the school’s single-season record with his 14th rushing touchdown.
Derek Hatcher Named CAA Special Teams Player Of The Week
After a career day returning punts, sophomore Derek Hatcher was named the CAA Football Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday. Hatcher returned a punt 66 yards for a touchdown and totaled a career-best 141 yards on his five returns as the 20th-ranked Spiders rolled to a 42-0 win over Stony Brook.
Field Hockey Outlasts La Salle in Overtime, 1-0
Sophomore Megan Thompson took the ball on the right wing 25 yards out and zigzagged through four defenders, flicking a shot past the keeper that sophomore Jess Weidner tapped across the line to give the Richmond field hockey team a 1-0 overtime victory over La Salle Sunday at Crenshaw Field. The Spiders saw their 44-game Atlantic 10 win streak snapped Friday with a 4-2 loss to West Chester.
George Washington Tops Men’s Soccer In OT
The men’s soccer team held the Atlantic 10’s highest scoring team without a goal throughout regulation, but with 2:00 remaining in the first overtime George Washington scored to take a 1-0 victory in the conference opener for both teams Saturday.
Women’s Soccer Suffers 2-1 OT Loss At First-Place Charlotte
Jessie Wolfe struck first for the Richmond women’s soccer team, but homestanding, first-place Charlotte scored the game’s final two goals, including the winner in overtime, to beat the Spiders 2-1 Sunday afternoon. The Spiders suffered a 2-0 setback on the road at defending league champion Saint Louis Friday evening.
Basketball Teams Hold First Practice Sessions
Both the men and women’s basketball teams were on the floor this past weekend for their first full practices in preparation for the 2007-08 season. The men open Nov. 5 against Maine in the 2k Sports College Hoops Classic at Memphis. The women tip off Nov. 9 at Georgia.
Chuck Boone Golf Classic Set For Homecoming Weekend
The Annual Chuck Boone Golf Classic will be held at Independence Golf Club Friday November 2, 2007. The event will benefit the Charles S. Boone Scholarship and Spider Athletics. Click here for printable registration form.
