Justin Rogers Named CAA Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Freshman Justin Rogers was named the CAA Football Special Teams Player of the Week after a record-setting day in kickoff returns in the victory over New Hampshire. Rogers set a school record with 222 yards in kickoff returns against the Wildcats, highlighted by an 85-yarder for a touchdown to open the second half and another for 84-yards to electrify the crowd of 8,995 at UR Stadium. His touchdown proved to be the margin in the Spiders’ victory.
Rogers and senior RB Tim Hightower are the lone repeat winners of CAA Football weekly award this season. Hightower, who should be among the leading candidates when the Walter Payton Award finalists are revised in mid-October, has won the conference’s Offensive Player of the Week honor twice.
Knight, Hudson Lead Women’s Soccer Past La Salle, 1-0
Sophomore Jessie Knight netted the game-winner in the 48th minute and junior goalkeeper Kate Hudson came up with six saves for her second straight shutout as the Richmond women’s soccer team defeated La Salle 1-0 at First Market Stadium Sunday afternoon.
Cross Country Teams Take Fourth At William & Mary Interregional
The men’s and women’s cross country teams each recorded fourth-place finishes in a tough field at the William & Mary Interregional in Williamsburg Saturday afternoon. Junior Kylee Schuler and sophomore Matt Llano were the Spiders’ top finishes in the meet.
Field Hockey Falls To Princeton
The field hockey team lost to Princeton 5-1 Sunday in the Spiders’ fourth-straight road game. Junior Alex Malatesta scored the Spiders’ goal on a penalty stroke. It was Malatesta’s third goal of the season.
Old Dominion Defeats Spiders In Double Overtime
The men’s soccer team battled Old Dominion scoreless through 104 minutes, but a goal in double overtime gave the Monarchs a 1-0 victory Saturday night. The Spiders were playing the third of four-straight games against teams that played in the NCAA Tournament last year.
