UR Modlin Center for the Arts - October Update

Here’s the latest (October) update from the University of Richmond’s Modlin Center for the Arts:

The latest from actor-director Tim Robbins

Less than two years ago, The Actors’ Gang visited Richmond with the heart-wrenching stories of Death Row inmates in The Exonerated. Known for creating bold, original works for the stage and daring reinterpretations of the classics, The Actors’ Gang returns this month with another production that will provoke our community into thinking about both local and global issues.

Imagine a world dominated by constant surveillance, masters of deceit, perpetual conflict-where war is peace, freedom is slavery and ignorance is strength. George Orwell-s 1984, created more than 50 years ago, continues to resonate disturbingly today. Tim Robbins, who directs The Actors- Gang in this powerful adaptation by San Francisco Mime Troupe-s Michael Gene Sullivan, elicits performances of raw energy and political immediacy.

Look for Celia Wren’s interview with Tim Robbins later this week in the Richmond Times-Dispatch. But for now, read the production blog by adaptor Michael Gene Sullivan (see below) and visit The Ministry of Truth in preparation for performances October 9-10 in the Modlin Center’s Alice Jepson Theatre. Tickets are available now.

This production contains brief, partial nudity and strong language.

Experience the lure of Mexican dance

Forty-seven dancers and musicians perform at Richmond’s Landmark Theatre later this month when Amalia Hernández-s Ballet Folklorico de Mexico comes to town. Shortly after forming the company in 1952, Amalia began to garner recognition as a highly respected cultural representative of Mexico. In Amalia’s ballets, the present fades as audience members embark on a journey through Mexico’s historically rich past. Thirty different cultures blossomed over the centuries, contributing to a colorful legacy, upon which Amalia Hernández has drawn to create the glorious Ballet Folklorico de Mexico.

Tickets are $22-$32 with discounts for seniors and children and are available now through Ticketmaster at (804) 262-8100 or ticketmaster.com. University of Richmond students and employees may contact the Modlin Center Box Office at (804) 289-8980 for tickets.

Now THIS is a world class performing arts center that the Richmond region can be proud of.

… and they are bringing DJ Spooky in next year too.

Talk about good taste. The Modlin is sponsoring Curated Culture and First Fridays Downtoan Artwalk this season as well!

I’m rapidly growing intrigued and thankful for all the events Modlin has to offer. I agree with you, Don: Modlin really IS a world class performing arts center. We should definitely be thankful to have such a venue in our city to attract many performers.
