Western Henrico students receive clothing from closed store

This is probably one of the coolest posts I’ve made since Jonah and I started NWEN only a couple of short weeks ago. To me, it defines community involvement and a spirit of “coming together” for our children.

For Jan Ward, the tradeoff was a no-brainer.

The Crestview Elementary School kindergarten teacher spent three hours of her summer vacation getting sweaty and dirty inside the former Harper’s Department Store, scouring for free clothing and other items that could be used by the western Henrico County school’s diverse student population.

Her presence at Harper’s and her interest in free clothes to help Crestview’s students caught the attention of Buck Tilman and Tom Jones, two Powhatan County auctioneers and collectors who wound up buying the entire contents of the store.

“A lot of this stuff will just end up at Goodwill anyway,” Tilman said. “We help out theater groups and all kinds of folks. We’re glad to do what we can.”
